    Poverty and Equity Global Practice and South Asia Region Poverty team

    The Poverty and Equity Global Practice, part of the Equitable Growth, Finance, and Institutions vice-presidency. We play a key role in supporting the World Bank Groups goals of ending extreme poverty and boosting shared prosperity

    The South Asia Poverty Unit (ESAPV) covers eight countries with a broad range of challenges and opportunities. They are at different stages of economic development, but all share the common goal of eliminating extreme poverty and reducing inequality. The Bangladesh poverty and equity program offers an exciting work program encompassing poverty monitoring and diagnostics – improving the measurement, monitoring, and understanding of the drivers of poverty and equity in Bangladesh.

    The program is organized around three main pillars: (a) poverty monitoring and diagnostics, (b) building evidence on equity and inclusion, and (c) assessing the impact of policies, programs, and reforms. Through these activities, the team supports the operationalization of a poverty and equity focus in WB operations in the country.

    Duties and Accountabilities:

    Participate in teams working on poverty, equity, and gender, jobs, including diagnostics of labor markets, social mobility, vulnerability, multi-dimensional poverty, and agency and voice.
    Use and develop new frameworks, instruments, and technologies to monitor poverty, equity, and gender trends and explain development outcomes.
    Contribute to inputs for advising country and sectoral teams on how to address poverty, equity, and gender issues in World Bank operations and promote evidence-based decision-making.
    Analyze the distributional impact of fiscal, social, and other sector policies and investments.
    Support the development of statistical tools for data sharing and promote the use of data for policy design.
    Participate in one of the thematic lines and add value to the global knowledge base.

    We are looking for an imaginative and innovative micro-economist with a demonstrated track record of sound analytical work and excellent judgment, strong client engagement skills, and effectiveness in working in a team environment.

    Selection Criteria

    Masters degree (PhD preferred) in Economics, Public Policy, Statistics or other related field, with a strong quantitative background and at least two years of relevant professional experience.
    Demonstrated strength in at least one of the three streams of work around which the poverty global practices country-level programs are structured (poverty, equity, and gender). Experience in more than one of those work streams is desirable;
    Technical and quantitative skills as an applied microeconomist; Strong skills in frontier econometrics methods, machine learning, and data visualization; Experience in designing and modeling economic behavior and outcomes using multiple and integrated sources of data (household and firm surveys, administrative data, etc.); Knowledge of statistical modeling software and programming languages;
    Demonstrated intellectual curiosity, creativity, and innovativeness.
    Superb interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate effectively with multi-disciplinary teams and to listen and integrate ideas from diverse sources, governments, NGOs, and donors while being respectful and sensitive to cultural, political, and gender issues;
    Ability to effectively collaborate with staff from all levels;
    Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
