A sewing machine is used to stitch the fabric and other pliable materials together with threads. Sewing machines were invented during the first Industrial Revolution to decrease the quantum of manual sewing done in garment industries. Since its invention, it has greatly improved the efficiency and productivity of the fabric, garment and needle industries. There are types of sewing machines according to the place of use like in which place you reusing it or it is intended to use. Basically, Sewing Machines are categorized based on their functionality, and they have also been categorized depending on their features like sewing, quilting and embroidery. In this article I will give specification of different industrial sewing machines. Industrial sewing machines are normally used in mass garment production. An industrial sewing machine is power-driven and runs at a very high speed. There are different types of industrial sewing machines. There are some special sewing machines developed for making specific seam and stitch classes. To have in-depth knowledge of sewing machines, different types of sewing machines are use in garments industry. The invention of the sewing machine is one of those quantum leaps' which created a new industry or revolutionised an existing one. By 1800 the processes used to make fibre into cloth were mechanised, carding, spinning and weaving could all be done by machine in large factories, leading to a large increase in the supply of good quality cloth. However, making cloth into clothes, household linens and furnishings, remained a hand occupation. The rich could employ a seamstress but most women had to make their own and their families clothes. However, in centres of population the collection of seamstresses into a factory environment, the 'sweatshop', arrived even for hand work by the 1830s The Napoleonic wars created great logistical problems in the production of large quan tities of complex uniforms. It is at this period that we find the first attempts to produce a sewing machine. All the inventions that I have found reference to tried to make a machine to imitatehand stitching. The most successful of these early attempts was by Barthelemy Thimonnier of Amplepuis, near Lyons, France, in the 1830s. His crude machine produced a tambour stitch (a single thread chain stitch) using a barbed needle like a small crochet hook. It did not produce a strong seam and the French equivalent of the Luddites smashed his machines and left him discouraged.The ten years from 1846 to 1856 would see the solution of almost all the technical problems in machine sewing and the next ten years saw the laying of the foundations of a major mass production industry.

The story starts in America and this paper confines itself to the development of the sewing machine in America and Great Britain.
